Warning all Coin Collectors: "Imitation"
Buffalo Silver Dollars
The U.S. Mint's newest Commemorative coin features a reproduction
of the Buffalo nickel complete with the face of an American Indian
on the obverse and a bison on the reverse. This silver dollar is
no longer available directly from the Mint. They have sold out their
complete supply of 500,000 copies in both proof and uncirculated
condition. Replicas are being produced and offered for sale by private
companies not authorized to copy this unique coin. Be sure to purchase
your copy from a reputable dealer if you haven't already added this
item to your collection.

Key points to look for in determining the authenticity of an offered
coin are:
- The year 2001 on the obverse.
- The artist's initial "F" for
James Earle Fraser, also on the front of the coin.
- A one-dollar denomination on the reverse.
- The mark "P" for Philadelphia,
the mint where the true coin was minted, also on the back of the
coin.
The design of the buffalo silver dollar is not protected by copyright
and is susceptible to this unauthorized reproduction by private
mints. Our Coin Keeper and
Coin Keeper Deluxe
programs will only list the U.S. Mint version in the U.S. Commemorative
database. Avoid adding the non-U.S. Mint version to your collection
if you wish to possess an authentic group of U.S. Commemorative
coins.
Note that you can enter coins from private mints as "Miscellaneous
Entries" to any Coin Keeper or Coin Keeper Deluxe database.
